What is the exhibition about?

The world's forests are being destroyed at an ever-increasing rate. We want to demonstrate this destruction in a visible way in the hope that it will raise awareness of the problem.

This is an interactive exhibition to demonstrate the global rates of clear-cut logging and slash-and-burn deforestation. The sim is covered with 1,681 trees; representing the world's forests in 1990. The exhibition runs for a month, during which time trees will be lost to either clear-cutting (represented by a tree stump) or slash-and-burn (smoking blackened tree stumps). The month will take us to a representative position in 2100, assuming that deforestation continues at current rates. We urge you to come back regularly to see the devastation.

How can I get involved?
If you have the time, you can save the trees from destruction by taking one of two actions; either making a donation by paying a tree (a random value between L$50 and L$150 will save a tree), or by hugging it (hugging for a random time somewhere between 20 and 30 minutes will save a tree). A saved tree will still be cut, but will be replaced with a sapling instead of a stump.

All very well, but what can I do in RL?
There are many things you can do in RL to help stop deforestation.
  • Reduce, reuse, recyle...use less - do you need that extra bar of chocolate (hmm...tough one!) or shiny new thing, reuse it where you can, recycle what you can't use.
  • If you are going to buy new, check the origin of the products you are buying. If possible, buy goods that are Forest Stewardship Council certified.
